Maul Maroons
The West Genesee Wildcats continued to plow through the
remainder of the 2003 regular season schedule with an
18-2 pasting of the Auburn Maroons at home on Thursday
5/15. Genny took a 5-1 first quarter lead and never looked
back. Junior middie Alex Bilyd the scoring followed
by a goal from junior attackman Andrew Hanover with an
assist from senior attackmate Jed Bebee and the Cats were
rolling 2-0. The Marooms first serious scoring attempt
didn’t occur until the 4:00 mark but senior goalie
Casey Rotella had the answer as he made a point blank
save on the crease. Genny increased their lead to 3-0
at 3:24 with a goal from senior middie Bill Gleason who
took a pass from linemate Keil Moore and buried a left
handed bullet in the twine.
Auburn finally made it on the board with 1:12 left in
the first quarter with what would be their only goal in
the first three quarters to cut the lead to 3-1. Cat hustle
paid off on the next goal with just 58 seconds left when
Hanover busted through a pack of Genny and Maroon players
scooped up a loose ball and fed Bebee who found Moore
alone in front for a 4-1 advantage. Moore then applied
the dagger less than 30 seconds later, the recipient of
another spectacular passing display which started with
senior co-captain Drew Dabrwoski to Hanover who once again
found Moore alone in front to end the quarter at 5-1.
The second quarter saw the Cats pickup where they left
off in the first with a goal at 11:17 from senior co-captain
Matt Cassalia who bulled his way past two defenders before
depositing his shot in the top right corner of the goal
for a 6-1 lead.
Dabrowski notched the Cats next goal at 9:31 taking a
feed from Hanover in tight quarters, spinning in front
of the cage and bouncing a left hander just under the
crossbar to increase the lead to 7-1. Cassalia made it
8-1 with his second of the game a left handed jump shot
just off the crease at 5:32 with an assist to Bily.
Senior Pat McCormick added one to the scoring column with
a blistering shot from out side to make the score 9-1
with 1:58 left in the half. But the Cats weren’t
done as Cassalia performed his face-off magic, hitting
Dabrowski who spotted Bebee and eight seconds later it
was 10-1.
Third quarter action began with Bily capitalizing on a
Genny man-up with an assist from Bebee to make it 11-1.
Senior defender co-captain Brian Calabrese started the
next Cat scoring rush at 8:14 picking up a loose ground
ball and transporting it up field and finding a wide
Dabrowski who made quick work of the Auburn defense putting
the Cats ahead 12-1. The Cats made the score 13-1 at 7:18
when Cassalia took the ball into the crease, drew defenders
and dished to Bily who one timed a cross cage feed to
Bebee who one timed the shot home. Cassalia netted his
third at 4:05 with an assist from Bebee to make the score
15-1. McCormack added his second as he tip-toed the crease
and put home a Bebbe feed with 1:18 left for a 16-1 advantage.
Senior middie Andrew Sugar took advantage of a Genny man-up
converting at 6:49 of the fourth quarter with an assist
from junior attackman Tom Donahue for a 17-1 lead. The
Maroons finally netted their second of the game with just
3:05 left, but their effort was off set with the Wildcats
18 and final goal of the game compliments of senior middie
Michael Paul Solamon who fire a rocket from outside with
an assist to Sugar capping the Genny victory. |
