Wildcats sting Hornets 11-1

Cats led by Hanover’s half dozen

The scene at Coyne Field on the Campus of Syracuse University was one that many Genny fans had not been accustomed to in some time. As they filed out of the stadium Friday and into the cool spring evening one would not have blamed them if they glanced twice at the final score as the Cats 6-0(12-1) bested the Fayetteville- Manlius Hornets.

Normally a West Genesee, Fayetteville contest is a nail-biting affair that is just a prelude to the inevitable Sec.III title dash. But on this evening it was all Wildcats as they raced to an 8-0 half time lead and out-shot the Hornets 37-12. Senior middie Matt O’Connell put the first score up on the board just 2:39 into the game with an unassisted goal to give Genny a 1-0 lead. Moments later Sophomore attackman Andrew Hanover netted the first of his six goals in the game and the Cats were in front 2-0.

With 4:47 left in the first, Hanover was at it again as he found himself widein front and received a perfect pass from senior middie, captain Mike Conklin and the Wildcats found themselves ahead 3-0. Junior attackman Drew Dabrowski made it 4-0 with 2:08 left with an assist to senior middie Devin Burgoon. With only 32 seconds left in the first quarter senior middie Jim Mullaley capped the Cats scoring run with an unassisted goal to give Genny a 5-0 lead.

Hanover wasted no time gathering his third goal of the contest with just 1:48 gone in the second. The goal was set up with a nice effort at midfield from senior defenseman P.J. Burns who won a scramble for a loose ball at midfield and then found Conklin who connected with a wide-Hanover for a 6-0 advantage. With 7:34 showing on the clock Hanover struck again with goal number four on a nice pass from senior middie Matt O’Connell who looped a pass over the Hornets defense putting Genny up 7-0.

Mullaley found his second goal of the evening with an assist from senior middie Matt Woolshlager and Genny found themselves with an 8-0 lead. F-M finally scored with only 54 seconds elapsed in the third but it was not enough as Hanover scored his fifth goal with 5:19 left in the third with an assist from O’Connell, then capped his night with the final tal y of the game, his sixth and Genny cruised to an 11-1 victory.
