Wildcats Manhandle Mounties 11-2
Mike Conklin leads the Cats with a five point game
The West Genesee Wildcats cruised to their second victory of the year 0-0(2-0) with an 11-2 defeat of the Sufferen Mounties from Section I. Genny made it look easy taking a 6-0 lead into the half and holding the Mounties scorless until the 8:16 mark of the third quarter. Junior attackman Drew Dabrowski had a hand in the first two goals of the game feeding sophomore attack-mate Andrew Hanover on the crease for a 1-0 lead at 8:21 of the first quarter. Moments later at 6:51 Dabrowski circled behind the Sufferen cage and found senior attackman Mike Conklin widein front for the first of his four goals on the day putting Genny up 2-0.
Conklin and Dabrowski hooked up again at 2:43 when Dabrowski found Conklin cutting to the cage, put the ball in his cross and Conklin did the rest extending the lead to 3-0. Senior midfielder Matt O'Connell ended the first quarter with a right handed bullet from 20 yards out that caught the top of the cage and the Cats were off to a 4-0 start.
The second quarter began much like the first as Conklin struck again with only 20 seconds missing from the clock. Conklin scored on a solo effort as he curled around the cage beat his defender and snuck one past the goalie for a 5-0 advantage. Senior midfielder Devin Burgoon ended the Cats first half scoring at 13:51 with an assist from senior midfielder Jim Mullaley giving the Cats a 6-0 first half cushion.
The Mounties finally managed to get on the board at 8:16 of the third quarter when junior attackman Evan Fox put a bounce shot over the shoulder of junior goalie Casey Rotella to cut the lead to 6-1.
O'Connell wasted little time answering for the Cats as he fired another laser at 6:54 past the junior Mountie goalie Scott Rothstein ballooning the lead to 7-1. Burgoon added to the Genny lead at 5:38 when he took a feed from behind the cage from Mike Conklin for his second goal of the contest and an 8-1 lead.
The Cats ninth goal of the came came by way of a great bit of hustle from junior midfielder Matt Cassalia who scooped the ball up at midfield rushed towards the Sufferen defense before dishing the ball to Dabrowski who was stationed at his right. Dabrowski took the pass and one timed to Mike Conklin at the far left corner of the cage, Conklin the deposited the ball behind a beleaguered Rothstein for a 9-1 lead. Cassalia netted his lone goal of the contest with another hustle play, which has become his trademark this season when he picked up a rebound of an own shot, spun by a defender then stuff the ball in the goal increasing the rout to 10-1.
Sufferen made the score 10-2 with 2:44 left in the game when Mountie junior Denise Rose put the ball past junior goalie Brian Cummings who had just been installed in the game for West Genny. The final Cat tally of the game with only 56 seconds left was by far the most artistic as junior attackman Jed Beebe took a cross cage feed from junior attackman Mike Malfitano while airborne and one timed his shot to seal the 11-2 Wildcat win.
