Blow Out Cyclones
The West Genesee Wildcats improved their regular season
record to 15-1 on Saturday at a sun drenched West Genesee
Highschool field by pulling the plug on the Watertown
Cyclones 17-4. Genny staked themselves to an early 2-1
first quarter lead with a goal by senior co-captain Drew
Dabrowski who took a pass from senior attackmate Jed Bebee
on the door step and stuck it home at 9:17 for a 1-0 advantage.
Junior attackman Andrew Hanover then increased the Cats
margin to 2-0 at 7:43 with an unassisted goal.
Watertown did manage to halve the lead just seven seconds
later when midfielder Kenny Nims (son of former All-American
Wildcat netminder Tom Nims) found the range for the Cyclones
and cut the lead to 2-1. Genny had two near misses following
the Watertown goal when junior middie Alex Bily beat his
defender but hit the right post, followed by a near miss
when senior co-captain Matt Cassalia evaded several defenders
only to be stuffed by the Watertown goalie on the doorstep.
The remaining few moments of the first quarter were spent
in the Genny defensive half of the field as the Cyclones
used a deliberate offense to keep the Cats from gaining
possession of the ball.
During the brief flurry it was senior goalie Casey Rotella
who made several back to back save on Nims to keep the
Cats in the lead. Watertown used more of the same determined
offensive pressure to begin the second quarter as two
goals one by Matt Emerson at 10:31 and a second by Greg
Narowski at 8:30 gave the visitors a 3-2 lead. Senior
Cat middie Jake Moulton evened the score at 3-3 with a
right- handed blast with an assist to Bebee at 6:46. Cassalia
nearly increased the lead as he stole a loose ball in
front of the Watertown goal but fired high over the cage
giving the Cyclones possession of the ball. With 3:56
to go in the half it was Nims again who shook his defender
behind the cage wrapped around and snuck a shot past Rotella
to give the Cyclones their last lead of the day 4-3.
Down a goal and struggling to retake the lead and the
game the Cats suddenly awoke from their mid day slumber
with a four goal barrage in the final 57 seconds of the
half. After Genny missed four consecutive shots Hanover
converted with 57 seconds left on a feed from Dabrowski
to knot the game at 4-4. With 34 seconds to go long stick
middie Cheney "Hoover" Raymond lugged the ball
down field and had his pass misdirected and it deflected
in to the Cyclone cage for a 5-4 Genny lead.
Senior middie Pat McCormack increased the Wildcat advantage
6-4 with bouncer into the cage with only 27 seconds to
go with an assist from Bebee. Hanover finally ended the
assault with an unassisted goal with just 16 seconds to
go to end the half with a 7-4 lead.
The third quarter began with a goal less than 30 seconds
in when Bebee found himself stationed alone in front of
the goal and turned a Hanover feed into an 8-4 advantage.
Hanover’s aggressive play was a key factor in the
next score, when he drove to the goal he lost the ball
while taking a big hit .But senior middie Kyle Moore made
the Cyclones pay for their aggressiveness and added his
first goal of the day increasing Genny’s margin
to 9-4. Cassalia used a timely pick from Bily at the top
of the crease to shake his defender at 7:43 to make the
score 10-4 in Gennys favor.
Moments later it was Moore again finding himself in the
right place as he fielded a rebound shot from Moulton
that careened off the post and stuck it back home for
an 11-4 lead.
With 4:52 left in the third Dabrowski and Hanover combined
for Genny’s 12-4 lead with a pretty play when the
former Genny hoop star Dabrowski took a cross cage lob
feed from Hanover, lept over the Cyclone defenders and
stuck the ball home as he landed outside the crease. McCormack
and Bily finished the third quarter assault with two late
goals putting the game out of reach at 14-4. The fourth
quarter saw senior middie Billy Gleason ad his first with
an unassisted tally to make it 15-4. Senior attackman
Mike Malfitano and junior attackman Brian Cost finished
the scoring for the Cats with assists from junior Tom
Donahue and senior middie Michael Paul Solamon to finalize
the game at 17-4. |
