Genny Bounces back against the Spartans 7-3


The West Genesee Wildcats, 3-0(8-1) rebounded from their first set back of the season with a 7-3 victory over the ESM Spartans, 0-3(5-4) Tuesday at home under the lights. Due to frigid conditions, glare of the setting evening sun and a slick field neither team seemed able to find an early rhythm.

Senior captain, attackman Mike Conklin did provide the Cats with two early opportunities in close but was turned aside both times with fine saves from the Spartan's sophomore goalie Stefan Schroder. Genny finally notched the first tally of the game with only 3:49 left in the quarter with junior midfielder Matt Cassalia firing a bounce shot past Schroder from the left side of the cage putting the Wildcats ahead 1-0.

The Cats second goal was just under a minute later when senior midfielder Matt O'Connell put another one hopper behind Schroder for a 2-0 lead. ESM ended the first quarter with an unassisted goal from senior attackman Ryan Lewis who spun to the right of junior Wildcat goalie Casey Rotella and stuck a shot in the bottom right hand corner of the cage to cut the lead to 2-1.

West Genesee scored the lone goal of the second quarter with only 2:56 left in the half on a shot by senior midfielder Devin Burgoon. Burgoon cut in front of the Spartan's cage took a feed from sophomore attackman Andrew Hanover and put it by Schroder to increase their lead to 3-1.

Lewis made the game close for ESM at the 9:02 mark of the third quarter when he took advantage of a failed clear and scored his second unassisted goal of the evening to inch the Spartans closer at 3-2. Mike Conklin answered for the Cats at 7:25 when he came out from behind the Spartan cage and received a nice pass from senior defenseman Rob Lemos who had a fine clear and snuck the ball by Schroder to make it 4-2. Junior midfielder Matt Cassalia made it 5-2 with his second tally of the night at 4:27 with an assist from senior captain,midfielder Mark Conklin. O'Connell added his second goal of the game to begin the final quarter at 8:40 as he cut to the crease took a pass from senior attackman Jake Bebee and made it 6-2 Genny.

The final Wildcat score of the evening came with 2:44 remaining on a goal by junior attackman Drew Dabrowski who took a pass in front of the Spartan goal from senior midfielder Matt Woolshlager to give the Cats a 7-2 lead.
ESM ended the scoring with only 42 seconds on Lewis's hat-trick as he drifted between the Wildcat defense and converted a midfield pass from senior defenseman Chris Doran making with the final score 7-3.
