Cats blank Cougars 10-0

Rotella makes 10 saves in shutout


The West Genesee Wildcats 7-1 (13-2) bounced back from Monday’s loss to Henninger with a resounding 10-0 shutout of Corcoran Thursday afternoon at Corcoran High School. Gennyd up the scoring with a three goal first quarter. Senior middie Matt Woolshalger found the net at the 9:03 mark to make it 1-0. Seconds later at 8:56 junior middie Matt Cassalia tallied unassisted to put the Cats ahead 2-0.With only five ticks remaining in the first quarter sophomore attackman Andrew Hanover took a pass from Cassalia and fired it home putting the visitors in the lead 3-0.

Cassalia helped increase the Wildcat margin with a goal at 9:25 of the second quarter putting Genny up 4-0.
Woolshlager netted his second of the game with an assist from senior attackman Jake Bebee to push the margin to 5-0 at 8:41. Senior middie Devin Burgoon capped the first half scoring with 3:24 left in the second stanza with another assist from Bebee, who slipped his defender behind the cage and hit the cutting Burgoon in front and the Cats strolled to half time with a 6-0 lead.

Genny netted the lone goal of the third quarter with only 30.5 ticks on the clock as Bebee got his third helper in a row, this time finding senior middie Matt O’Connell on the doorstep to give the Cats a 7-0 advantage. Bebee finally got on the goal-scoring end with 2:44 left in the game with an assist to Cassalia who froze his man to the right of the Corcoran cage slid to the goal, then hit a wideBebee who redirected a one timer into the empty net for an 8-0 lead.

Genny took advantage of some Corcoran rough play with senior co-captain, middie Mike Conklin scoring on an assist from senior middie Jim Mullaley while the Cougars had two men in the box to help extend the deficit to 9-0. Conklin netted his second and final Genny goal of the game with only 59.5 seconds left with an assist to Hanover as the Cats cruised to a 10-0 victory. The Genny defense played it tough down the stretch posting the shutout led by the goaltending of junior Casey Rotella and senior defensemen Chad Clark, Rob Lemos, Andy Zysk with the help of the long stick midfielders senior P.J. Burns and junior Brian Calabrese.
